GUIDING QUESTION How can one individual make a difference?
Think back on your reading of the unit selections. Discuss what you did to understand what you read.
In this unit, you learned about some ways writers organize ideas: chronological order and problem-and-solution. Draw a diagram that shows the organization of one of the selections from this unit. Use your drawing to explain the organization of the selection to a partner.
As you read the selections, you learned to ask and answer questions about the text. Explain to a partner how you will use this strategy in the future.
Throughout this unit, you have been thinking about how one person can make a difference. Choose one of these ways to explore the Guiding Question:
• Discuss With a group, discuss ways an individual can make a difference. Listen to and share examples from life. What challenges may a person have to face to make a positive change?
• Role-Play Imagine that you know someone who is being bullied. One person can take that role, and another can offer advice. Be honest about the difficulty the person faces in dealing with the situation.
• Write Choose an issue or problem in your community or school that needs to be solved. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper about the problem.
