Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky

an adaptation of a Nigerian myth

Long before time began, the Sun and the Moon met and got married. They created a home on Land and started their life together. They wanted to tell someone of their happiness, so they invited their friend the Ocean to visit.

“You are very kind to invite me,” said the Ocean. “Unfortunately, I cannot accept your invitation.”

“Oh dear!” cried the Moon. “You do not like us anymore.”

The Ocean replied, “Of course I do. I just don’t think I will fit inside your house.”

“Aha!” blazed the Sun angrily. “You don’t think our home is fancy enough.”

“I do!” the Ocean insisted. “I’m sure it’s brilliant, but—.”

“Then come in,” said the Moon and she opened the doors. The house was huge and stretched as far as the eye could see. The Ocean shyly inched across the threshold.

“Come on in, there’s lots of space,” laughed the Sun. So the Ocean began to flow in more rapidly.

Soon the entire floor was flooded in water. “See? There was nothing to worry about,” said the Moon.

“Actually, I have only just begun to enter,” said the Ocean and with that, a large wave rushed across the room and splashed against the walls. The Sun and the Moon rose higher and higher to avoid getting wet.
