Define and Explain

Many inventions, such as MP3 players, cell phones, and computers, make our lives easier. It can be hard to remember a time without them.

Work with a small group. Define and explain a gadget or invention you use all the time. Tell why you feel it is important.

First, use a Word Web to collect the important words that go with your invention. Here is a Word Web about a cell phone. Decide which words you may need to define for your group. Use a dictionary if necessary.

Present your gadget to another group. When you give your explanation, define at least one word. Answer questions they may have. Trade roles.

Use Prepositions

When you define and explain, you may tell details or give examples to illustrate what you’re talking about. Use prepositions to tell location, direction, time, and origin.

Location:I can use my laptop in the car.
Direction:I scroll through the menu for help.
Time:After school, I send text messages to my friends.
Origin:I like to receive e-mails from my friends.
