Clarify and Verify

What school or classroom rules are important for new students to know?

With a small group of students, role-play explaining and clarifying a classroom or school rule to a new student. Tell how you could clarify or verify the information.

First, think of some rules and questions about them that a new student might ask. Make a chart like this one.

Take turns role-playing the new student and the informed student. As the new student, clarify and verify new ideas and information. As the veteran student, clarify and verify the rule.

Use Pronouns in the Subject and the Predicate

When you clarify and verify information, you may need to ask questions or restate information in a way that makes the meaning clear. If you use pronouns in the subject or the predicate of your sentences, remember that the pronoun has to match the noun it refers to.

In the Subject:Students must be in their seats when the bell rings.
They must get to class on time.
In the Predicate:Why do students have to follow rules?
Rules help them learn better.
