During grape harvest season in 1965, grape growers in the U.S. cut back on how much they paid the farm workers. To fight the pay cut, the farm workers developed a new and effective plan. Under the leadership of Cesar Chavez, the workers went directly to people and asked them to stop buying grapes. Over time, the plan worked. In 1969, the grape growers signed a contract with farm workers promising better pay and fair treatment.

In 1942 the United States and Japan were at war. The President of the U.S. issued an Executive Order that said Japanese Americans on the west coast had to leave their homes and live in government camps. Families were forced to move to terrible, overcrowded camps guarded by soldiers. Many of these people were good citizens, and not one had been proved to be a spy.
After the war, Japanese Americans spent years working to get an apology from the U.S. government. Finally, Congress passed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. The Act formally admitted the suffering and losses of the Japanese Americans during World War II. Their honor was properly restored at last.
