Express Opinions

When you express an opinion, you tell what you think or how you feel about something. Read this story. How do you think Rico should solve his problem?

Rico looked forward to the football game on Saturday night. The teams were cross-town rivals, and excitement had been building for weeks.

On Saturday morning, Rico’s mom told him that she needed him to babysit his five-year-old sister. Their regular sitter had canceled, and Rico’s parents had to go to a business dinner.

When Rico protested, his mom told him that there was nothing else they could do.

First, gather your opinions in a list, like this example.

    My Opinions:

  • I think Rico should try to go to the game.

  • In my opinion, his parents are being unfair.

  • They could try to find another babysitter.

Then use your list to express your opinions with a group.

How to Express Opinions

  • 1. Tell what you think or believe.

  • 2. Use opinion words like I think, I don’t think, I believe, I don’t believe, in my opinion.

  • 3. Give reasons for your opinions. Then people will take them more seriously.

I don’t think Rico should have to babysit. He’s been planning on going to the game for weeks.

Use Complete Sentences

When you tell your opinions, use complete sentences to express yourself. Make sure there is a subject and a verb in each sentence.
