DRAMA

What Makes a Good Story? Some of the characteristics of a good story are vivid descriptions, interesting events, and an expressive reading.

When you give a narrative presentation, you tell a story. It may be fictional or true. Here is one way to tell a story:

Here is the same part of the story, told another way:

Both passages have a setting, characters, and a plot. But the second one includes more sensory detail.

  • 1 Plan Your Presentation Follow these steps to help you plan your presentation:

    • • Choose a topic. What kind of stories do you like? Make sure it’s a story that will interest others, too.

    • • Identify the story elements. Think about the plot, characters, and setting of your story.

    • • Include specific details that will make the story real.

    • • Write an outline of the story before you tell it.

    • • Include time words such as first, next, and then so listeners can follow the story. Look for places to use sensory language.

    • • Practice telling your story so it becomes natural for you.

  • 2 Give Your Narrative Presentation Present your narrative to the class.

As you speak, make eye contact with your audience. Use expression and gestures to help them “see” the story.
