1 Pick a Position Reread the persuasive essays about running a restaurant (pages 586–587). Now think about a job you would be great at. Write a position statement on a notecard.

2 Gather Evidence What if you had to persuade someone to give you this job? What is the main reason you would be great at it? What evidence, or proof, could you give that would support your position? Remember that evidence such as facts, statistics, quotations, and expert opinions are very persuasive. Add some notes about evidence to your notecard.

• Stand up straight. Show interest in your topic.

• Make eye contact with your audience.

• Speak slowly and clearly. Don’t rush. Speak loudly enough to be heard.

• Introduce your topic clearly at the beginning.

• Speak with expression. Let your voice rise and fall with the flow of ideas.

• Use words like “first,” “also,” and “in addition” to make points of support clear.

• Use gestures and body motions where you can.

• Conclude by restating your position and the support.

4 Listen to Others Identify your classmates’ positions and points of support as they present. Show respect for their opinions and their efforts.
