ACT 3: At The Camp

SCENE 1 The next morning the three brothers set out to hunt as usual, leaving their sister behind to care for the camp. LITTLE LISTENER is cooking by the fire. But this time she has a much larger cooking pot than usual. She does not do her usual chores. Instead she cooks up a big batch of stew. She gathers bearskin robes and spreads them out behind the lodge to make a place of honor as if for an expected guest.

LITTLE LISTENER. I think this may be enough food. [She gets up and looks behind the wigwam.] And I have spread out all of our blankets to make a resting place back here. Yes, I think everything is ready. [She looks toward stage left and cups her hand over her ear to listen. LITTLE LISTENER sits down with her back toward stage left.]

[Boom, boom. BOOM, BOOM. The sound comes closer until the Chenoo appears at stage left, walking heavily. It stalks forward slowly, lifting a foot and thudding it down. LITTLE LISTENER does not seem to hear it or move. The Chenoo seems puzzled by that, lifts another foot and thuds it down. Still, LITTLE LISTENER doesn’t react.]

CHENOO. Garrnh. Garg. Arrk. Grrr?

[The Chenoo stalks closer until he is standing right over LITTLE LISTENER. He raises his arms up as if to grab her. Suddenly LITTLE LISTENER turns around and smiles up at the Chenoo in delight.]

LITTLE LISTENER. Grandfather! I am glad you have come to visit me. [She stands up and wraps her arms around the monster in a big hug.] Oh, grandfather!

CHENOO. [snarls] Garrh! Garg! Grrrrrannnndfatherrrr?
