The brothers pause, surprised that she is not more excited. They notice the empty stew pot and that there is no food cooking. They look at each other, puzzled.]
THIRD BROTHER. Tell us about your day, sister. What did you do?
LITTLE LISTENER. My day was quiet. I gathered berries and firewood. I made a big stew and invited our grandfather into our camp.
OLDEST BROTHER. Grandfather? Our grandfather is here?
SECOND BROTHER. What grandfather?
THIRD BROTHER. Do we have a grandfather?
LITTLE LISTENER. Indeed. He is sleeping now. I will wake him, but you must promise me to greet him as your relative when he comes outside.
OLDEST BROTHER. Of course we will greet him. Wake him up. [LITTLE LISTENER stands up and taps on the side of the lodge.]
LITTLE LISTENER. Grandfather, your three grandsons are here. They wish to greet you. [Chenoo sits up and then stands, looming over the three brothers who are paralyzed with terror. They stare at the Chenoo, so frightened that they cannot speak.]
CHENOO. Garrrh?
LITTLE LISTENER. [nudges OLDEST BROTHER] Greet our grandfather.
OLDEST BROTHER, SECOND BROTHER, and THIRD BROTHER. [together in shaking voices] Welcome, grandfather.
CHENOO. Grrrranndsooons?
OLDEST BROTHER. [still shaking but steps forward to greet the Chenoo] We are glad to see you. It has been so long since we have seen you that you appear new to us.
SECOND BROTHER and THIRD BROTHER. [standing behind OLDEST BROTHER, nodding their heads in unison] Unh-hunnh.
CHENOO. Grrr, grandsons, I am glad you have greeted me as a relative. I see you have gotten food for my dinner.
[The Chenoo reaches out to take the rabbit, goose, and deer from the three brothers, and stuffs the food into his mouth.]
