Reading Strategy

Follow these steps to read a word with -ed.

  • 1 Look for the ending you know. Cover it.

Illustration of “lifted” with “ed” highlighted. Below it a finger covers “ed.”
  • 2 Look for vowel and consonant patterns to sound out the base word.

    Photograph of a finger next to the word “lift”l + i + f + t = lift

I see two consonants after the vowel i, so the i is short.

  • 3 Look at the entire word again. Blend the base word and the ending to read the word.

    lift + ed = lifted

Blend lift and ed to say the word lifted.
