Jane Doesn’t Help!
Jane’s father told her that she had to help him clean out the attic tomorrow. Jane had other plans, so she was not happy. As Jane came up the steps, she saw a crib, a bed, games, pots and pans, a hose, skates, and picture frames. Then she saw a lampshade, a desk, a rake, a box of old plates, a cane, fake plants, a fake snake, and a globe. Her father said, “If we work together, we can get rid of this junk in no time!”
Jane looked around. “That’s the pole I had to catch my first fish. Those are my first skates. And, this is the bat I had to hit a home run. I made this puppet in second grade! This stuff is not junk! What’s in this box, Dad?” asked Jane.
“Family pictures,” said Dad. This is Grandma Rose as a baby. And, this is Grandpa Gabe when he was ten.”
“Save them!” yelled Jane.
“Look at these, Jane. Grandma brought these plates and cups from Finland when she came here on a ship. Grandma’s wedding dress is in this big box.”
“Save those things! I will take them!” said Jane as she looked around. “I can put this crate next to my bed and set a vase on it. And, save this globe, this lamp, this game, this rug, this puppet, this shell, this jump rope, this red cape, and this whole case of plastic cups.”
“You are not helping a bit, Jane!” laughed Dad. “I’ll just do this job alone.”
