Vocabulary Study: Use Context Clues

Use a Dictionary Many English words have more than one meaning. The meanings are numbered in a dictionary. You can figure out the correct meaning of a word from the context.

Read this passage from “Kids Like Me.” You can figure out the meaning of value by using family as a clue. Here, value means “an idea that people care about.”

Manuel: In Peru, family is the main value.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

Suppose you ask a friend about her math teacher. She answers, “His bark is worse than his bite!” You may not know this expression. Your friend may need to explain it. She means that the teacher is nicer than he seems.

  • 1 Interpret an Expression Suppose you and a friend go somewhere new. You don’t know any other people there. Your friend says, “I feel like a fish out of water!” In a group, discuss what this expression means.

  • 2 List Expressions Think of other common expressions. What do they say about the culture?

  • 3 Share with the Class Present an expression to the class. Explain what it means. Speak slowly and clearly. Check that your listeners follow what you say.
