Suppose a leaky faucet drips once per second. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the leak adds up to 3,000 gallons of water per year!

Fixing a leak is one way to save water. There are many other ways. Research the topic of water use. Then write one way people can save water.

  • 1 Focus Your Research People use water at home for cooking, cleaning, and gardening. How can they use less water? Search for answers using library books or the Internet. Narrow your topic by choosing one way to save water.

  • 2 Take Notes As you research, write the important information you find. Include facts, or things that can be proved. Find short statements from experts on the topic. Note where you find the information so you can go back to it if you need to.

  • 3 Write a Paragraph Begin with a sentence that tells how people can use less water. Add sentences with the facts and statements you found. If you use the exact words of the statement, put quotation marks around the words. Be sure to tell who said the statement. For example: “It is everyone’s responsibility to save water,” Professor Lin believes.

  • 4 Present Your Ideas Read your paragraph to a group. Then listen to other people’s ideas about water use.
