Study the Models When you share what you know about a topic like water, it is important to express your thoughts completely. If you leave out the subject or the predicate in a sentence, the reader will get confused.

Not Ok

The biggest ocean on Earth. The Pacific Ocean covers more space than all the land on Earth. Has the deepest areas on Earth. Has powerful storms, too. You would not guess this because the word pacific means “peaceful.”

The writer leaves out important parts of sentences. The reader is confused: “The thoughts are not complete.”

Ok

The biggest ocean on Earth is the Pacific. The Pacific Ocean covers more space than all the land on Earth. It has the deepest areas on Earth. The Pacific has powerful storms, too. You would not guess this because the word pacific means “peaceful.”

The writer adds a missing predicate and two missing subjects. Now the writer’s sentences are complete.

Revise It Read the passage below. Work with a partner to revise it. Add one subject and one predicate.

Water covers nearly three-fourths of the surface of Earth. A tiny amount of this water is fresh water. All the rest of the water. Earth’s salt water is divided into five oceans. Are the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Southern Oceans.
