Listening/Speaking: Perform a Play
DRAMA

DRAMA

Bring “Mister Monster” to life by performing it in class.

  • 1 Assign Roles Begin with the cast of characters on page 255 of “Mister Monster.” Decide who will play which role. Don’t forget other parts, such as the cat and the voice of the salesman on TV.

  • 2 Assign Other Tasks Many people, besides actors, work hard to put on a play. You will need a director and a stage manager. Other important jobs include

    • • copying and distributing the script

    • • helping the actors learn their parts

    • • creating the sets

    • • making costumes and props

    • • designing and performing sound effects.

  • 3 Study the Script Notice the structure of the play. How many scenes, or sections, is it divided into? Then review these dramatic elements:

    • • dialogue: the words the actors speak, or their lines

    • • stage directions: instructions that describe how the actors look and act, and what the stage looks like

This prop could be used in Scene Two of “Mister Monster.”

  • 4 Rehearse With the help of the director, decide where the actors should stand and move on the stage during each scene. Actors should use the correct tone of voice, gestures, and expressions to communicate the meaning. Speak clearly and loudly. Other students can practice their jobs, such as changing the sets, putting out the props, and making sound effects.

  • 5 Perform the Play Invite family members or another class to the performance.
