Use Appropriate Language

We all express ourselves in different ways. Think about how you express yourself. Do you like to draw or paint? Do you act, sing, or play an instrument? Interview a partner. Start by listing interview questions like these:

Take notes as your partner answers the questions. Then use your notes to prepare a presentation for the class. Before you give your presentation, consider the way you spoke during the interview. Then consider the language you will use when you speak to the class.

How to Use Appropriate Language

1. Use words that match the audience and the occasion.
• Use formal language when you give a presentation. Formal language is proper and polite.
• Use informal language when you talk with a friend. Informal language uses familiar expressions and ordinary, everyday words.
2. Use appropriate facial expressions, body language, tone, and volume.
• In a formal situation, look serious. Stand up straight. Make eye contact. Speak loudly and clearly enough for the audience to hear you.
• In an informal situation, you can act more relaxed and less serious. You can speak with more emotion.

Use Complete Sentences

When you give your presentation, be sure to use complete sentences. Remember, a complete sentence has a subject and a predicate.
