A past tense verb shows an action that already happened. For most verbs, add -ed to show past tense.
EXAMPLE | I traveled to the fishing village yesterday. |
Use special past tense forms with irregular verbs.
In the Present: | I find good places to fish. |
In the Past: | I found the best place yesterday. |

go, goes | went | Then we went to sleep. |
know | knew | The strangers knew where we wanted to go. |
make | made | One of the men made a map for us to follow. |
meet | met | We met some villagers by the big river. |
see | saw | We saw their canoes on the shore. |
take | took | The villagers took us to their village. |
Say each sentence. Then say it again, and change the verb to the past tense.
1. I see someone in a canoe.
2. I ask for a ride.
3. The man takes me to his village.
4. I make a new friend.
Say each sentence. Write the past tense of the verb on a card. Then say the sentence, and add the past tense verb.
5. The next day, we go to fish in the river.
6. I find the perfect place to fish.
7. We bring the fish back to the village.
8. The villagers cook corn bread to share with us.
