Summarize

Imagine you are a guest at the dinner where the explorer that you learned about on page 387 spoke. You just listened to the explorer give his speech about the New World. What do you think of his speech? Do you agree with his point of view?

Share your point of view about the explorer’s speech with a partner. Take notes as you listen to your partner give his or her point of view.

Next, summarize your partner’s point of view. Decide on the most important information to include in your summary. Leave out unnecessary details. Your summary should be shorter than the original telling.

Use Present and Past Tense Verbs

When you summarize, you might tell about events that happened in the past. If so, you need to use verbs in the past tense. Or you may need to tell about something that is true in the present. If so, use verbs in the present tense.

In the Past:The natives shared their land and food with the explorers. But soon more people arrived. They brought gifts and diseases with them.
In the Present:The explorers think the native people are happy to be part of the changes and progress in the world.
