• Academic Vocabulary
Certain words in this glossary have a red dot indicating that they are academic vocabulary words. These are the words that you will use as you study many different subjects in school.
Parts of an Entry
• affirm (u-furm) v. To affirm means to show, say, or prove that something is true. My decision to volunteer at the hospital was affirmed when I saw how happy the patients were because of my visit.
The pronunciation shows you how to say the word.
part of speech
n. for noun
v. for verb
adj. for adjective
adv. for adverb
The definition gives the meaning of the word.
The sample sentence uses the word in a way that shows its meaning.
The red dot signals that a word is an academic vocabulary word. Not all words have a red dot.
