How have you made a difference in someone’s life or in your community? Share what you did with a partner, and summarize your partner’s experience.

Follow these steps to create your summary.

  • 1. Take notes as you listen to your partner speak. Decide what information is important to include in your summary and what information can be left out.

  • 2. Just tell the main ideas or most important information. A good summary is shorter than the original telling or text.

  • 3. Use your own words to summarize your partner’s experience.

Listen to your partner tell about what he or she did to make a difference. Summarize what your partner said. Trade roles.

Use Verbs in the Past Tense

The event you summarize happened in the past. You will need to use past tense verbs when you talk about it. Remember that most verbs add -ed to make their past tense forms. Irregular verbs use special forms to show the past.

Irregular:Like knew that his elderly neighbor had a doctor’s appointment.
Regular:Ike shoveled the snow off his neighbor’s sidewalk. Ike’s neighbor thanked Ike for his thoughtfulness.
