Vocabulary Study: Use Context Clues: Specialized Language

Specialized language consists of words or phrases used in a certain place or situation. In some cases, specialized language may be related to a particular setting or culture, as it is in “The Girl and the Chenoo.”

In this example, you can tell from the context that a game bag is a place to keep things caught on a hunt.

Onstage, actors give life to the characters in a drama. They move, speak, and interpret the characters’ actions according to a script. Each actor’s performance is different. With a group, take turns reading aloud an act from the play.

  • 1 Practice Decide who will read which part. Practice reading your part. Think about your character’s personality, voice, and motives.

  • 2 Present As a group, rehearse the act and present it to your classmates. Speak clearly and loudly so the audience can understand you. Use gestures and expressions to keep the audience’s attention.

  • 3 Discuss Take turns reading with other groups. Notice how others say their lines. Discuss what each person does well. How is each group’s reading different?
