Decodable Passage 5

Jim and Big Gus

Jim is in a bad, bad rut. He wants to fix a hot meal for his pal, Big Gus. He wants to mix up something fun to eat at six. But, what will it be? Jim has to think fast.

Can he fix a pan of hot ham? Jim bit his lip. A pan of hot ham is not bad, but it is not great. “Hot ham is a bit of a risk,” Jim thinks.

Will Gus like clam dip? No. Clam dip will be a dud!

Jim thinks. Will Gus like crab crisp? No. Crab crisp is not a fun meal.

Will Gus eat a vat of ox stew? No. Ox stew is a bit bland.

Just then, Jim has an idea. Jim grabs a pot and drops a big pat of butter and an egg into it. Jim drops in a cup of flour and a bit of mint. And then, Jim drops in something secret! Finally, Jim puts a lid on the pot and sits.

At six, there is a rap, rap, rap on the door. It is Big Gus.

“It is six, and here I am!” says Big Gus.

“Sit, Gus!” says Jim. “I will grab the pot.”

Big Gus had a small bit of the food.

“What is in it?” Big Gus asks.

“Fig!” answers Jim.

“Fig?” asks Big Gus.

“Fig,” says Jim. “It is fig pudding.”

“Mmm,” says Big Gus.

“Is it good and fun?” asks Jim.

“It is!” answers Big Gus.
