Academic Vocabulary

  • • define (di-fīn) verb When you define something, you tell what it means.

Nonfiction books, such as textbooks and reference books, often include tools to help readers.

  • • A glossary is a list of special terms used in the book and their meanings. It lists the terms in alphabetical order. It is usually near the end of the book.

  • • An index is a list of topics with page numbers. The topics are in alphabetical order. The numbers tell you the pages where you can find information about the topic. The index is usually at the end of the book.
